ALOTAU MP Charles Abel has resigned from the People’s National Congress Party to join the Our Development Party.
Abel said he tendered his resignation to the Peter O’Neill-led party on Thursday during the party’s caucus.
“It was not a surprise as I gave in my notice to resign at least a month ago, along with other PNC party members who have since resigned from the party,” he said.
“We are now trying to work together to improve some things, particularly in managing our economy.”
Abel said they (had) not been able to make the changes that the country needed, “so this a step towards improving”.
“Having said that, I am still grateful to the former Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to serve in his cabinet all these years since 2011. I thank the party, ” he said.
“We will continue to work together as a coalition but it is now time to move on.”
He will be joining Sir Puka Temu’s Our Development Party. “I thank him (Sir Puka) for inviting me,” he said.
Abel said the Our Development Party had six MPs and they would be making some announcements on their policies and membership.
