Accountant puts money on Chimbu

An accountant who was once a farmer is offering K1000 as tuition fee assistance for any student from his clans in Chimbu to attend the University of Technology (Unitech) next year.
Kawage Paiaman Sigl, from Simbaiku Kura clan in Kerowagi district, told The National on Saturday that he would assist any student in the Kura and Bundo clans, selected to study civil engineering at Unitech. He said the assistance would be for the first semester.
Sigl is a project accountant in the Highlands under the World Bank -funded Productive Partnership in Agriculture programme supported by the government.
He said he struggled to be where he was and wanted to share his blessings with the youths who worked hard to enter university.
Sigl said when he returned to school in 1993 to repeat grade six at Kimagl Primary School in Kerowagi after dropping out in 1989, he saw how hard it was for his parents to find money to send him to school.
“This is not my first time to assist students. Since I started as an accountant in 2006 after graduating from Unitech with a degree in commerce specialising in accountancy, I helped many with school fees and now is my first time to come out publicly,” he said.
