Accused armed robber in court

A-25-YEAR-OLD man charged with armed robbery and unlawful use of the motor vehicle, which he allegedly stole with his gang, was remanded by the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.
Magistrate Garry Unjo ordered George Nanigo, of Apaeva village in Abau, Central, to appear again for mention on June 25.
It was alleged that on May 15 at around 7:15am, Nanigo and four others held up Raphael Pio with two homemade pistols at Gerehu Stage 3B and took a grey Nissan Navara, license plate ZNC 446 and valued at K94,000, from him.
The vehicle belonged to the National Capital District Commission.
Pio was on his way to pick up his boss, Malaga Aria, when Nanigo and his accomplices allegedly stopped him and held him up with guns.
He was pushed out of the vehicle and told to lay flat on the road while one of them stood on his feet and told him to hand over the keys.
Nanigo was the alleged gunman.
They got the keys and fled in the vehicle.
The vehicle was chased by Task Force Unit 203 after being alerted.
They chased them along Yumi Yet Real Estate compound and onto the Baruni road where they crashed into a drain.
The driver was shot on the right leg and admitted at Gerehu General Hospital and Nanigo was taken to the Boroko Police Station and detained.
Nanigo allegedly admitted to committing the offence with four others – Roy (driver), Charlie, Ovia and Wally were formally arrested and charged with one count each of armed robbery, stealing a motor vehicle and illegal use of motor vehicle.
