A COURT has committed a 42-year-old man charged with alleged willful murder of his nephew in Port Moresby last year to stand trial in the National Court.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Danny Wakikura yesterday told Paul Paika, from Tanipai village, Woitape in Central that he was committed to stand trial proper on July 18 as there were sufficient evidence provided to the court by police.
Paika in his Section 96 statement told the court that he hit the deceased on his hands and legs and not the head as stated in the medical report.
It was alleged that on July 15, 2021, at Evan settlement in Port Moresby, Jules Mavai was out drinking with his friends and came back around 2am and swore at Paika who was sitting with a woman.
The deceased continued to swear as he walked into the yard where they lived.
Paika followed Maiva into the yard, got a club and hit Mavai on his face, using both hands.
Mavai fell to the ground and struggled to get onto his feet but Paika hit him the second time on his neck.
Paika then left Mavai helpless and walked away.
Mavai was later rushed to Port Moresby General Hospital by relatives where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
