FIVE policemen and a policewoman have been arrested and charged with breaching the curfew under the state of emergency (SOE) orders in the National Capital District (NCD), according to police.
Officer in-charge of policing the police unit in NCD Insp Robert Wane said the six allegedly breached the curfew on different dates.
“I do not want to see people posting allegations against police officers on social media. “I encourage them to come to my office at the Gordon Police Station with all their evidence and lay formal complaints so we can procceed to arrest and charge the police officers,” Insp Wane said.
He said the policewoman along with two female PNG Defence Force soldiers and an officer from the Internal Revenue Commission were caught allegedly breaching the curfew and were arrested and charged on Wednesday.
They were detained at the Boroko Police Station and later released on a K500 bail each.
Insp Wane said the curfew orders were issued by the SOE controller and officers from the disciplined forces enforcing the orders must also follow them.
He said those enforcing the orders should not drink alcohol while on duty and certainly not drink and drive around because there was liquor ban in place.
Meanwhile, East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli said he was looking at funding the Internal Investigation Unit (IIU) in the province to help the public attend to public complaints against the police in the province.
He said most police officers at checkpoints were abusing their police powers so the unit would work in the province to arrest and charge policemen or women.
“I had been reading posts from the social media on my police officers misbehaving but I do not have evidence to deal with them.
“I want the public to come with all their evidence and put formal complaints with the IIU officers so they can carry out the investigation,” Supt Beli said.

  • Are the police, suppose to check for traffic offences at the curfew check points and collect money without TIN?????

  • hey bro…this is PNG, Police or who ever they are can collect money with out any TIN, that’s for their beer/Buai and smoke money.

  • That’s how corrupt we are. When are we going to change such attitudes? The descipline forces are the worst department in the gov’t.
this is totally abuse of power

  • police this days are using guns like a Bank card to threatened people to withdraw money from peoples pocket-SORI LON OL KAIN POLIS OSEM NA KRAI GUTRU LON OL_TRANGU TINGIN RICE PACKET LON AVINUN

  • The Training program in Bomana to be a police officer should include a lot of counselling courses/modules. By the nature of their training, they are very aggressive, applying force and command. They need to adjust to situations/offences. For example, chasing criminals, stopping tribal fights, riots and the like warrant force, but observing COVID 19 SOE restrictions is more of health issue than a police matter. Police should use their counselling skills to advise people rather than belting and wiping people to go home.
