A HEALTH centre in Ambunti-Dreikikier, East Sepik will receive a major facelift after 50 years of existence through funding from the Asian Development Bank.
The facility is expected to be upgraded to a level-three standard hospital, with housing, medical staff and supplies. District health manageress Dominica Waiin said they treated more than 100 patients daily.
“If we are down with workers, medical supplies or cases which are too serious to treat like cuttings or mothers having complications in delivery, we make referrals,” Waiin said.
“This is very costly for patients. Sometimes they will not be able to make it on time and lives are lost.”
She said more lives would be saved as health workers would be provided accommodation and cases handled at the district.
Ambunti-Dreikikier MP Johnson Wapunai thanked the bank for selecting the district.
The bank funded similar projects in Pomio (East New Britain), Koroba-Lake Kopiago (Hela) and Bulolo (Morobe).
