AFL Papua New Guinea is considering new selection trials for the national men’s and women’s squads following the deferral of the International Cup to next year over the Covid-19 pandemic.
AFLPNG senior community football manager Rex Leka said squad training was put on hold following the state of emergency restrictions in March but with the Cup now deferred, the sport’s national governing body was looking at fresh trials as an option.
The Cup will be postponed until July-August next year and will be played in Australia. It was initially scheduled to be played from July 25 to Aug 8 this year.
“We’re waiting for a meeting to confirm whether to continue with the same selection or to do up another one,” Leka said.
“We are still waiting on the commission to meet and make a decision on the squads that were selected after last year’s national championships in Kimbe.
“The selection was for the training squads but the final list wasn’t done.
“We were supposed to have some trials during the Easter but everything was put on hold.”
