BEREINA in Kairuku, Central, came alive with sporting activities earlier this month as more than 20 clubs competed in the 2021 Governor’s Cup boxing tournament hosted by the Kairuku Amateur Boxing Association.
The activities included soccer and rugby league matches.
Governor Robert Agarobe donated K40,000 for the tournament and a further K10,000 for prize money was handed over by provincial administrator Francis Koaba.
Koaba told the people of Kairuku that sports was one of three pillars of development in the province.

“Apart from supporting boxing, rugby league, soccer and other codes, we are all for sports,” he said.
“Sports are an important tool, sports will keep us fit and healthy, and sports will also teach us discipline.
“When you have too many cigarettes and beers, you grow a pot belly.
“But if you play sports, you become physically and mentally fit.
“If you take part in church activities, you are spiritually fit.
“That’s the beauty about sports and boxing is no different. Our way forward is to build structures.

“Gather yourselves into collective interest groups, whether it be sports, religion, agriculture or business.
“We must get ourselves organised, the provincial government and administration are willing to assist.”
Koaba said individual interests would not be pursued as public funds were meant to be enjoyed collectively.
He donated two sets of jerseys to Beowaiki Rugby Football League, which consists youths from Bereina, Oreke, Waima and Kivori.
Koaba also pledged K5,000 for the Kairuku administration to organise sporting activities for Bereina youths as part of an effort to help address law and order issues.
Kairuku local level government president Steven Ani also donated sporting gear and uniforms to Mekeo, Kuni and Kairuku to compete in matches at Bereina.
