Agreement review aims to help fisheries sector

A MEMORANDUM of agreement (MOA) review and consultation between the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and provinces is underway in Port Moresby this week.
It is to add value to how businesses are serving people in the fisheries sector.
NFA managing director John Kasu, said the review exercise signified a milestone in cooperation on areas of common interests to fisheries, where the basic intention was to add value to the manner in which NFA and provinces did business.
“We will discuss and consult on how best we can add value to our relationship, especially in view of the challenges and emerging issues that has, and will no doubt, influence the way we have collaborated, cooperated and supported each other over the years,” Kasu said.
“We must, therefore, welcome the opportunity to have frank and open exchanges on issues of importance that will not only influence, but are fundamental to shaping, the long term success of our relationship.”
He said the Government had prioritised provinces and wanted to ensure they were empowered with the relevant capacity building to generate revenue.
“At NFA, we are conscious of this government directive and will therefore align our efforts to be in tandem with these priorities,” he said.
Kasu encouraged the officers to be mindful of the Government’s priority to be captured in the cooperative framework, which was essential.
“I encourage you to prioritise in line with Government directives.
“Build on your strengths as we rationalise our limited resources to achieve efficiency gains.
“If we can work together, we can overcome and still serve our people within our limitations.”
