Border ops back to normal

NORMAL police operations continue at the PNG-Indonesia border after the recent unrest in West Papua, acting deputy commissioner operations Donald Yamasombi says.
Yamasombi said police would assist in providing border security when the level of threat was imminent but, according to assessments done by the Immigration Department, there was no threat.
He said providing security to PNG’s borders was the duty of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force and police would only assist.
“We have not assigned any extra police personnel there because we were looking at the threat level, if it was imminent on our side we would have deployed, but I understand that we have line agencies like the PNG Customs, Immigration and the PNG Defence Force out there,” he said.
“The PNGDF have a national duty to be there, should the situation warrant it, we will deploy, but not yet, we have not deployed anyone.
“Police operations at the border are as normal because the level of threat assessed by Immigration has indicated that there is no threat and the border is open.”
