AIR Niugini will now operate its Boeing 737 to Gurney Airport in Milne Bay three times a week, says chief executive officer Bruce Alabaster.
The B737 will carry up to 116 passengers (12 business and 104 economy) per flight.
Alotau MP Charles Abel with delegates from the provincial administration and tourism bureau welcomed the inaugural flight to Gurney on Friday.
A minute of silence was also observed in honour of the passing of PNG’s founding father Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
“We will be operating B737 in here three times a week, as well as the Fokker aircraft on another days,” Alabaster, who was part of the inaugural flight, said.
“Gurney is the second domestic airport that we are operating the B737 to, we operate up to twice daily to Mt Hagen, now into Gurney and we are extending up to Manus as well.
“My complements to the Government for all the works, they have done the Gurney Airport and runway to extend and I understand, that the next step is for a new terminal as well.”
