A CESSNA 402C aircraft was yesterday found abandoned at the end of a newly-built airstrip near Papa and Lealea villages about 30km from Port Moresby, police say.
It was partly burned but there were no passengers or pilot on board.
Acting Deputy Comm of Police (DCP) operations Donald Yamasombi confirmed that police were helping the Accident Investigation Commission (AIC) investigate how the plane ended up there on Sunday afternoon.
DCP Yamasombi said they managed to find out that it was an Australian-owned aircraft and flown in by an Australian from overseas.
“The Australian High Commission is eager to find the pilot,” he said.
“I can confirm there was a plane crash, investigators are looking into it.
“Our personnel is at the crash site assisting AIC investigators.
“We were advised by the Australian High Commission that an Australian is the pilot.
“We don’t know where he is.
“The high commission is concerned about his safety and welfare and we are assisting to locate him.”
DCP Yamasombi said nothing was found in the plane.
In regards to the airstrip that seemed to have been recently constructed, he said it was subject to investigation as well.
“Yes, well, it is all subject to investigations and verification,” he said.
“Until such time investigations are complete, we will not be in a position to release any information, we cannot speculate until investigations are completed.”
DCP Yamasombi said the aircraft crash-landed on Sunday between 2pm and 3pm at Keiva village, a few kilometres outside Papa and Lealea.
According to Keiva villagers, the plane was seen flying low and had circled the hillside before disappearing.
The villagers later found the plane and reported it to police.
Yesterday morning, police officers, Australian federal police and the air traffic accident investigators were at the scene.
The Accident Investigation Commission, in a statement, said a distress signal was detected on Sunday.

  • There are illicit acitivities going on especially in the provinces along the international borderline. Can the Government consider and put up post in those provinces to monitor any activities going on or make awareness to the ordinary citizens of this nation to be responsible of protecting our nation against invaders. They should without fear or without any threat from anybody to report any illicit movement

  • How come our CAA the Aviation could not detect identify this flight. Or whatever. Or is it a way to spread covid 19 into remote sites? Check it out.

  • These types of flights are meant to be secret but somehow they revealed themselves what they have been up to.
They could be smuggling something out of port moresby.
Civil aviation need to do a thorough investigation on this incident before we are too late.

  • Yes, can the PNG Government and CAA authorities do a thoroughly investigations and jail the pilot and passengers for illegal landing. Australia has got tough laws on borders protection and their CAA Rules and Regulations. No pngs would be easily allowed into their country ( Australia) without immgration documentarions). Australia is not above the law. Just throw him into jail, if found alive for breaking PNG CAA laws.

  • It’s a wake-up call for authorities. Australia has been stealing from our land for a very long time. Painim pailot na trmoim em go insait long Bomana. If one does not respect you what would you do? Find the person or persons and get down to the bottom of their reasons for illegally entering PNG. Sounds like a covet and illegal operation being exposed.

  • This is very serious. Please locate the pilot and find out coz he may have transported illegal items etc….

  • Perhaps it’s just the ‘Asian-4’ again like in June when PM said, “PNG needs to reopen its gate to allow people to continue operating their businesses..”

  • Please investigate the matter carefully and find out why the plane is illegally entering the country?

  • The authorities should be suspicious of why that foreign useless abandoned the plan and ran away into hiding? There must be some high profile dealings. please check all the hospitals including the private and bring that culprit into investigation. People can not even say enough is enough! we are already tired of such illicit dealings.
