PNG Air acting chief executive officer Stanley Stevens says the airline is closely monitoring the law and order situation in Tari, Hela.
He said the airline flew into Tari twice a week, and was getting hourly updates from officials on the ground following the attack on police personnel and property over the weekend.
“For us, it depends, if there’s security issues at the airports, it is NAC (National Airports Corporation) that manages all airports so, in Hela province, Tari is the airport that we go through,” he said.
“We will have to basically get clearance from NAC as the operator and owner of the airport.”
“We as an airline have our own (procedure), what we call HRA (hazard risk assessment), so before we can go back into the airport, we have to ensure that everything is okay for us to go,” he said.
“With the current situation, our flight is scheduled for Friday (tomorrow).
“Currently the Tari manager is giving us an update every hour, so by tomorrow (today), we will make a decision whether to fly into Tari.
“For us as an airline we will have to ensure that it is safe for us to go back there.”
