Airport breach a massive failure

Letters, Normal

THIS is an open letter to Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation Don Polye regarding the recent incident at the Jackson Airport domestic terminal.
The shooting to death of a gold buyer inside the airport terminal by criminals is an act of terrorism, similar to incidents around the world that needs immediate action.
It is a massive security breach which means “major negligence” or a “management failure”.
This is a disaster in the making and it is outrageous the sliding electronic doors and video cameras are not working.
It is simply poor security practice to allow some five criminals into the domestic terminal without going through some form of screening process that passengers and flight crews go through.
I know what every airport worker in PNG knows: Our planes and terminals are vulnerable to terrorists and until we correct that, our security stinks.
The fact that someone was killed inside an airport terminal would have set off the alarm bells among the top shots elsewhere in the world.
Correct me if I am wrong but it appears PNG has not learned from this incident and is not bothered.
By right, the first order of business must be an examination of how well our airlines, airport authorities and government must fulfil their respective duties to provide reasonable protection against the likelihood of terrorist or criminal acts.
This call for action is not meant as an indictment of the performance of those responsible for aviation security in our country nor is it a call for litigation.
It is, rather, a plea for a public inquiry into how this incident could have taken place.
We need to know how armed robbers entered the terminal and shot a person to death.
If it is not serious, many would have likened it to a Hollywood movie.
And to make such a comparison is all the more painful.
We must make every effort to ensure that we are never again vulnerable to such an attack in the further, Mr Minister.
