Call to ban alcohol by PPC correct

Letters, Normal

I REFER to the call by Madang PPC Tony Wagambie Jr to ban alcohol in Bogia due to the continuous tribal clashes between Manam settlers and landowners.
The conflict has resulted in the loss of many lives.
The Royal PNG Constabulary have tried to maintain control but they are hopelessly outnumbered because there is no support from the government.
Without any logistic and financial support from the government, the most obvious and logical option left for Wagambie is to call for a total ban of alcohol – no sale and distribution – in the district.
On behalf of the people of Madang province, we would like to salute the PPC for his superb decision.
We also call on the elected leaders of the province to sit down with the PPC and discuss ways to assist the RPNGC and end the conflict.
The leaders need to discuss compensation, resettlement or other measures and to reach a binding agreement between the two parties to put an end to the tribal clash once and for all.
We appeal to the liquor distributors in Bogia to understand the move by the PPC and bear with it for the moment.
