TWO Aitape men’s teams are expected to compete in a series of soccer friendlies in Wewak, East Sepik, next month.
During a meeting with the organising committee recently, Ian Smith — the town mayor for Aitape Urban LLG — confirmed that Aitape was ready for the challenge.
Smith said most of the players had competed in other competitions outside of Aitape.
The Aitape Urban LLG is the sponsor of the Aitape men’s soccer teams.
Clubs that have shown interest to take part are Morobe United (one team), Toti City (one team), Nuku LLG (two teams), West Sepik (one team), the host district (six teams) and Jayapura (three teams).
The committee confirmed the friendlies would run from July 19-23, coinciding with the Remembrance Day commemorations.
Treasurer Morah Sandu told The National yesterday that the Aitape teams would be accommodated at the Boys Town.
Wewak town mayor Charles Malenki said a fundraising dinner would be held in Wewak on Saturday with proceeds going towards hosting the friendlies.
