PAPUA NEW Guinea Kumuls forward Wellington Albert is appealing for peace in his home town of Mendi, Southern Highlands, following the recent election-related violence.
The 28-year-old who plays for London Broncos in the English tier two competition, told The National yesterday that the people of Mendi and leaders of Southern Highlands needed to put their political differences aside and let peace prevail.
Albert, who also hails from Karinz local level government, Mendi district, said the burning of properties and loss of lives in his home town was a devastating news to hear.
“Leaders in the province must take a stand against these riots and violence that is happening in Mendi because innocent people are becoming victims,” the former SP Hunter said.
“I’m also appealing to the youths not to be influenced by politicians. Destroying properties and killing is not the way.
“We call Mendi our home. We should be proud of our town, look after it and help develop it and not destroy it.
“As for myself, I grew up in that town and seeing it going up in flames on social media is heart breaking.
“We won’t get far if our people in the province don’t change their ways. We are tired of violence and lawlessness, when will we change the negative perception that we get from people in other parts of the country and abroad?
“The government should also look at ways to restore confidence in our electoral system so that we can have peaceful and fair elections.”
Other rugby league players from Southern Highlands in SP Hunters Solo Wane and Gilimo Paul also shared similar sentiments on social media.
