Alleged smuggler detained in Indonesia

A Papua New Guinean is now in detention in Indonesia for allegedly smuggling marijuana across the border into Jayapura city, consul-general Geoffrey Wiri says.
He said Brian Samban, 32, from Arop in Aitape, West Sepik, allegedly posed as an Indonesian citizen and was arrested with 71 plastic bags of marijuana in Jayapura.
He was allegedly in possession of a fake Indonesian citizenship identification card which stated his name was “Abraham Jikwa” from Jayapura.
Wiri said Samban had been released from Bolangi Narcotic Prison in Makassar City, Sulawesi province, four months ago after serving six years for smuggling drug.
Wiri said Samban had his left leg amputated after being shot when attempting to escape from Doyo Narcotic Prison in Jayapura City, Papua province in 2018 when serving his first term for drug smuggling.
“Unfortunately this time, he will face a harsher penalty in a prison that will be further into Indonesia. Not Sulawesi or even Papua provinces,” Wiri said.
He said the PNG consulate would not help Samban because he was caught with a false Indonesian citizenship identification card.
Wiri said after having his leg amputated, Samban was sent to Bolangi Narcotic Prison with five other PNG drug smugglers in 2018 after attempting to escape.
“He completed his six-year jail term in August and we sent him back to West Sepik after quarantining him for the Covid-19 in Jayapura. Last week, he returned with drugs and is now in detention,” he said.

  • He’s not only missing a leg but some brain cells too.
Unless of course there are lots of one legged drug smugglers in Papuan province so police wouldn’t recognise him
