KIMBE Cutters coach Jessie Alunga has praised his forwards for laying the foundation for their backs to get the edge over Waghi Tumbe in Port Moresby on Saturday.
The Cutters are on sixth spot in the 12-team Digicel Cup after securing their first victory of the season with a 14-4 win over Waghi Tumbe in round two at Sir John Guise Stadium.
“After our maiden Digicel Cup campaign last year, we realised that we needed more weight in our pack,” Alunga said.
“So this season, we’ve recruited some bigger forwards who have really boosted the side.
“The win against Tumbe came off the back of our forwards laying the platform for our backs who had enough time and space to score points.
“It’s great to get our first win of the season and we are aiming to maintain this style of play going forward.”
He said SP Hunters squad member Justin Yoka and former Goroka Lahanis fullback Jah Hogan had added another dimension to their attack.
“Yoka and Hogan are quality players, and they have shown that by leading our backs over the last two round,” Alunga said. “I am impressed with their performances so far and I hope they maintain their form all season.”
However, he said defence was their only issue. “It’s something we really need to work on,” Alunga said.
“We’ve improved in other areas so far but we really need get our defensive structures right to win more games.”
Kimbe face the Central Dabaris in round three at Sir John Guise Stadium on Sunday.
