PAPUA New Guinea Kumuls veteran Stargroth Amean says rugby league coaches, including those in the Digicel Cup, are responsible for instilling discipline and good sportsmanship in their young players.
The former SP Hunters fullback told The National yesterday that some upcoming players were lacking discipline and good sportsmanship which needed to be instilled at the junior level.
The 28-year-old used Hela Wigmen’s late hits on fellow Kumul and Port Moresby Viper Ase Boas during Sunday’s Digicel Cup minor semifinal as a case in point.
“Coaches play an important role in developing players, whether it be schools rugby league or the Digicel Cup,” said Amean, who has so far played six tests for PNG.
“Coaches should not encourage players to play dirty just to win games.
“This is bad for our game as it hinders the progress of players and the sport in the country.
“We should be in the business of producing clean, top-quality players.”
Amean said discipline was part of why PNG had made significant progress at the international level in recent years.

  • Thanks SA. As the saying goes, if I was once good at such dirty tactics in my game days, I will also instill such in my colleagues and or players am grooming. Let them play such dirty games but such players will not make it into Hunters and Kumuls teams.
