Apec giving SMEs big boost

Business

SMALL businesses in Apec nations are connecting to the regional and global market with the assistance of the Apec small and medium-sized enterprises working group.
The SMEs employ over half of the workforce in Apec member economies.
Sharon Kenatsi tells of the opportunity Apec provided her with to expose her handicraft.
Her handicraft business also motivated her to help jobless locals in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
“Young girls back at home are unemployed but gifted with handicraft skills,” she said.
“They have the potential of earning incomes while preserving their arts and cultures through their handicraft.
“I encouraged them by buying their products and reselling them outside.”
She said the Bougainville Pride Arts and Crafts Limited’s products are uniquely made and the raw materials for production were derived from seashells, coconut and pandanus leaves.
These are used to weave baskets, mats and even jewelry.
“This is a home-based business and the exposure at an international level is all I need.
“The Apec meeting has given me the opportunity to showcase my products.
“I hope to establish contacts with potential buyers locally and internationally to sell my products.”
Apec SME provides opportunity for small businesses to prosper through its member economies.
Kenatsi is also supported by Apec in the preservation of Bougainville’s traditional arts and crafts.
