THE close-protection training for police is not only for the benefit of Apec but also beyond that, Insp Lucas Atkins with the Australian Federal Police says.
The training is part of the PNG-Australia policing programme.
He said K15 million had been used on facilities at McGregor Barracks in Port Moresby, the purchase of 16 vehicles and uniforms.
“When we leave, PNG can carry on the programme,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said PNG was ready to deliver a safe and secure Apec.
This he said was proved during the first senior officials meeting where delegates were provided “close protection” service.
“We have trained 289 close protection operators.
“They will also undergo refresher maintenance programme to ensure they are ready to go in November.”
Atkins said the training was being held in Port Moresby and East New Britain and would be extended to Mt Hagen, Lae and Madang.
“From a close-protection standard, PNG is ready to deliver with the 289 highly trained officers and 65 drivers,” he said.
“The country is ready to go.”
Sixteen police officers in East New Britain underwent the training and were issued pins to show they were close-protection officers.
