THE Catholic Bishop Conference has condemned the use of social media to defame people.
General secretary Fr Victor Roche said it was wrong to defame people, including leaders.
“It is really sad that some people through social media shows lack of respect for our leaders,” he said.
“If people want to make comments regarding any issues in the country, they should make known their contact details and identity and take ownership of their action. It is not fair and just to defame a person anonymously.”
Roche urged Minister for Energy, Communication and Information Technology Sam Basil to take legal action against such people and enforce the laws on cybercrime and bullying to regulate the use of social medial.
Roche also urged the Government to speed up the NID card programme.
“PNG is preparing for Apec,” he said.
“We have to show other countries that there is order and respect from the government down to the people.”
