APPLICATIONS are still open to Central students wishing to be considered for the Kila Haoda scholarship in the 2016 academic year.

Scholarships coordinator Joseph Loi said spaces were still available for students accepted into tertiary, colleges and other established higher private institutions.

He said so far, they have only received 430 eligible applications from an annual requirement of 1000 plus applications.

Loi said only students from rural Central villages would be considered to participate in the scholarship and they must be identified by their respective LLG presidents and ward councillors prior to applying.

Loi said the scholarship established in 2013 was purposely to relieve parents and guardians of a financial burden and the scholarship programme subsidised each eligible students’ fees by K2000, which is paid directly to the school account.

A recipient, Teppsy Beni from Bereina, who will be doing her Masters in Archaeology at the UPNG, said she was excited about the scholarship programme as this was her fist time to apply.

He thanked the Governor for meeting part of her fees.

Loi said the scholarship was to upskill the provinces’ human resource so they can one day help to develop the province because currently Central badly lacked the required human resource.

He said since 2013, more than 3000 students have benefitted from the scholarship, with a total funding of K6.2 million spent and another K2 million allocated for this year. Some of the institutions attended by Central students include Balob Teachers College, Divine Word University, UPNG and Enga School of Nursing.
