WHEN a senior politician has serious allegations made against him and a pending misappropriation case, is it not public interest that he should not be appointed a cabinet minister?
With convicted criminal William Kapris making all sorts of allegations against Patrick Pruaitch and an outstanding leadership case pending against him, I felt it was not appropriate for him to be given the finance and treasury ministry.
Public opinion has an influence in the development and formulation of key government policies and laws.
Likewise, when the acting prime minister and his advisers are contemplating on the appointments of senior ministers and bureaucrats, it is very important they consider the wider implications and perceptions of the public.
The public are recipients and beneficiaries of government policies, laws and, important decisions and appointments.
As such, public opinion must be respected in the decision-making process.
What message is the acting prime minister giving to the public by appointing a senior politician like Pruaitch, whose reputation and integrity as a leader is being questioned?
There is no doubt the acting prime minister is a good man.
But he must let his principles speak louder because he now occupies the top executive position of the nation and six million pairs of eyes are watching him.
He must appoint ministers with integrity to work with him.
The country needs mature, honest and transparent leaders.
The acting prime minister knows how important this is for our country.
He should, therefore, demonstrate decisive leadership because the country awaits a true leader when it matters most.
Sam Abal could be that leader but only if he shines brighter.
