Appointments for Tvet colleges should be fair

Letters

STAFF appointments for technical and vocational education and training (Tvet) colleges for 2022 transition period were abused by one or two head office personnel.
When proper appointments for Tvet colleges come around during the year, they should be handled properly by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) using due public service processes of appointments.
The appointments should not be messed up again this time.
There has been hijacking of staff appointments over the years by the Tvet professional staff committee.
This has been a pain to so many hardworking and qualified teachers over time.
The system of appointments has been favouring under-qualified and semi-skilled professionals most times.
The job on their appointed positions were too much for them, resulting in poor outcomes over the years.
This problem should be corrected once and for all by DHERST.
Tvet colleges were excited and happy to have a good and strong start with DHERST in the start of this academic year, but this is not so as staff appointments are not reflecting the capabilities of the staff being appointed on the respective positions.
This is unfair on those who
deserve higher roles in Tvet colleges.
This practice of hijacking the appointment processes and systems should be stopped and not to be brought into DHERST.
Continuing this practice would will only weaken the staff morale in carrying out their duties and roles and will result in the loss of confidence in the department. Staff appointments should be done on merit.
Appointments for Tvet colleges were always biased over the years.
Tvet inspections were also biased, resulting in a lot of staff missing out on the substantive roles to enjoy good salaries, as compared with the general education system where teachers are enjoying steady pay packets even during Christmas vacation periods.
Tvet colleges’ teachers have not been enjoying benefits from the Teaching Service Commission due to fluctuations in their salaries.
Teachers on acting positions above their base levels have been on higher duty allowances during the school year only.
Over the Christmas vacation periods, the salaries do normally drop down to the base levels.
This is not good.
This time, we hope DHERST will do something different with regards to positions and salaries of staff under their care.
