THE Aroma Coast Rugby League kicked off its annual junior tournament on Monday with 29 teams competing at the Pelagai Oval in Central.
Aroma Coast Rugby League chief executive Chris Enara told The National yesterday that matches were played in the Under-16 and U18 divisions before next week’s U20 and open fixtures.
“We have 21 U16 and eight U18 teams,” the former Brian Bell Bulldogs and Central Dabaris coach said.
“This is the 10th anniversary of the tournament.
“We have been hosting the tournament since 2010 and it continues to grow each year.
“This week, we are only hosting U18 and U16 divisions, the finals will be held on Saturday.
“Next week, we will host the U20 and open divisions.
“For the U16s, the 21 teams have been placed into four pools, five in each pool except for one which has six teams.
“For the U18s, the eight teams have been divided into two pools.”
Enara said the playoff formats would be same across all divisions in the tournament.
He said the pool winners, runners-up and third-place finishers would compete for the Cup, Plate and Bowl respectively in each division.
Meanwhile, Enara invited Digicel Cup teams to use the tournament to scout for potential players.
“We have many unknown talents,” he said.
“Digicel Cup teams are more than welcome to come.”
