Arrested for having cigarettes

Letters

I WAS arrested in my second year at the University of PNG by the Uniforce Security guards in 2019 around the sixth week of the first semester for being in possession of Cambridge cigarettes on campus.
Apart from the cigarettes, my backpack had a Dell laptop, a Samsung smartphone and a document folder which were seized by the UPNG guards and a particular police officer.
I was locked at the Waigani police station cell.
While in search for better air after a sleepless night in the cell corridor, a cop came and stood before the cell’s rusty iron rods and demanded my laptop’s password.
He claimed that he needed the password to ensure I was the owner.
I did as he demanded.
He returned shortly after that and demanded my phone’s password for the same reason.
I was stressed because I had no one to call for help and was worried about school.
I gave him the passwords in hope that that would help me avoid being abused.
That didn’t happen.
I was misled.
The devices’ passwords were changed without my consent.
At about 3pm, I was transferred by an unmarked vehicle to Boroko police station cell and was locked in cell 3.
To my surprise, I was charged for being in possession of marijuana.
I didn’t know how marijuana got into my bag. My case was adjourned after two mentions due to lack of evidence while the cop was having his time using my laptop and phone.
The Boroko Committal Court prosecutor drafted a court order and handed it to the Waigani station commander to return my bag to the prosecutor’s office.
After one night in Waigani cell and additional 12 nights at Boroko cell, the cop finally returned the bag.
He did not appear in court.
The accusation was defunct and I was freed.
The situation was unfair but I maintained my peace with the idea that everything happens for a reason.
I managed to have successfully complete my second year of studies and now my third year is almost over.
I am looking forward to my final year of studies.
Cherish every moment while you’re breathing and always remember to do unto others what you want them to do to you.
Be blessed.

  • Youngman, of course everything happens for a reason, I beleive this unwarranted situation has made you more smarther and wiser. On the other hand, if this Coper reads this it should also give him some reason to change and be a model of change

    God bless you
