POLICE have arrested a shop owner in Mt Hagen over illegal power connection and a church pastor is wanted for questioning for the same reason, PNG Power Ltd says.
The shop and a church building were identified as having illegal connections during a PNG Power meter survey yesterday.
PNG Power staff and police moved into Keltiga outside Mt Hagen and arrested the shop owner while the pastor was not around.
PNG Power’s Highlands region customer services manager Paul Nau said Mt Hagen had so many illegal connections and they were cleaning up the mess.
He said the survey had been carried out last month, with awareness done for the people to remove or not to be involved with illegal connections.
Nau said many people were engaged in illegal connections and he was expecting more arrests to be made. “We will be working around to make sure Western Highlands will not be taking part in anymore illegal connections,” he said.
“We are starting in Hagen electorate, the first areas are Keltiga, Kaiwe and parts of surrounding communities like Welia, Kuta, Warakum, Holy Trinity and into rural areas and the squatter settlements.”
Nau said nothing was free and people had to pay for services.
He said the clean-up work was being done to stop people from stealing power.
He also warned those who were going around connecting power illegally to be very careful because they would be facing the consequences.
He said the process of connecting power would be slow because meters were in Port Moresby and would take time to reach them.
“You have to be patient so that we can make proper connections,” Nau said.

  • This also happens to Port Moresby would be good. Too many illegal connection. PNG Power and PNG Waters as well.

  • Well done PNG Power.
Can that also be done in PoM? Especially the rental accommodations units/rooms in the city?

Eda Ranu should do the same too

  • What about pom?

When my unit is down and lived in the dark, while other houses are have no problem with the light.
PNG Power need to check both side of the coin, your own workmen taking long steps ladders around and dealing with the locals to collect their own lunch money.
People are talking corruption and corruption starts where?

  • POM is much much worst than any other centers this should start effective from top down or this initiative should apply in every centers in a given time frame and not on adhoc bases at your own branch level…

  • PNG Power is too slack in providing easy pei boxes, I applied two years ago and still waiting.

I stay & work in Lae; can someone from Head Officer check the Lae Regional manager????????
