Assistance scheme helps Gulf students

GULF students attending the Sacred Heart Teachers College at Bomana are now able to complete their studies through the tertiary assistant scheme.
The TAS is the first for Gulf students attending the college.
It has boosted education of the students and will help to improve the literacy rate of the province which is recorded to be one of the lowest in the country, according to the last report on National Statistics on Education and Literacy in PNG.
College principal Theckla Aknonero said the scheme is really helping students because all the students are non-school leavers and on self-sponsor.
“When they come we do not send them away but look for ways on how to assist them. Some even come with no money at all but are not sent away because there is a need for teachers especially back in their province.”
“One of the greatest achievement of the scheme is that schools which were closed because of no teachers available have being opened because the students who graduated from the college go back to teach in their villages,” Aknonero said.
