Mendani helps students

Education

KEREMA Open MP Richard Mendani last week presented a cheque each to 11 educational institutions within the National Capital District for the tuition fees of Gulf students.
The presentation is an initiative under the Tertiary Assistants Fee Scheme which was introduced by Mendani in 2014.
The programme aims to assist the human resource capacity of the public and particularly the people of Gulf.
He said the province has infrastructures such as roads and schools but such is useless if the human resources lack skills and knowledge on how to use such infrastructures.
“We have a new highway from Port Moresby to Kerema town, but the ability of Kerema citizens to utilize these roads and other infrastructures is uncertain because the initiative and skills for them to use the facilities are not there,” he said.
“The training of our human resources is very critical that’s why I am focusing on that.”
Gulf students attending the Sacred Heart Teachers College at Bomana have benefited from the programme since its inception.
College principle Theckla Aknonero said the programme has helped a lot of students complete their studies.
The Tertiary Assistants Fee Scheme is also benefited by Gulf students in institutions outside the National Capital District.
Mendani said helping the students of the electorate to getting them educated is the changing cornerstone for Kerema.
“I now see that only education can bring changes to our people and the district,” he said.
“Therefore, the district administration would continue to look at alternatives to help the students from the district to complete their education so that they would return to develop Kerema.”
