CRICKET Papua New Guinea (CPNG) launched the Sinaugoro Cricket Association last week with the new affiliate member keen to revive the sport in inland Rigo, Central.
Association president Buri Magari said the association was formed between the villages of Gomore, Kwalimurubu and Kemaia with the hope of re-introducing the sport after a 17-year absence.
“We once were cricket-playing villages,” he told The National.
“But after such a long period without the sport, we’ve decided to get back into playing cricket.
“After talking with all the concerned villages, we decided to put together the association and we’ve successfully returned and re-launched cricket for our area.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do.
“So we will be having our local competition to select a team to represent Sinaugoro in the Central Cup.
“This will also be another avenue to get our youths involved and participate in something meaningful besides maintaining their bad habits like taking drugs and consuming alcohol.”
Magari said the potential of cricket benefiting the Sinaugoro people was high with local talent Kopi Kopi, from Gomore, making the men’s the national team (Barrmundis).
