CHIMBU native and field athletics representative Paul Kauge is hoping to make it big as he eyes a spot in the Digicel Cup this year.
After representing Chimbu in the discus, shot put and javelin at the 2017 PNG Games in Kimbe, the 24-year-old is hoping to get a start in the country’s top rugby league competition.
Kauge, who took up rugby league in 2017, is among a handful of talented players to come out of competition of the Kerowagi Coffee Cup in Chimbu and Mt Wilhelm league.
“I started playing in the centres when I joined the Lae Rugby League competition for the Eriku Spiders but I’ve since left to come back home and now play in the Coffee Cup,” he told The National.
“Coming back home, I had a few games at fullback and I’ve become used to playing in this role and I’m hoping that I can advance from here and get more experience.
“The biggest stage I’ve played in was this year’s Ipatas Cup, it was slow start but I enjoyed every minute of it.
“At the moment now, a few players from our league in Kerowagi and I are still open to clubs in the Digicel Cup because we’ve missed out on our provincial side getting a spot in this year’s competition but we want to play at top national level,” he said.
