Athletics PNG focuses on West New Britain

AS the year drew to a close, Athletics Papua New Guinea’s (APNG) focus was in West New Britain, beginning with PNG Air Grand Prix Series from Nov 26-28, then an Oceania technical officiating course from Nov 29- Dec 1 followed by the PNG Air National Track and Field Championships from Dec 3-5.
After a one-day break, an Oceania athletics basic coaching course was delivered from Dec 7-9.
APNG saw the need for the wider community taking part in athletics activities to provide them with the basic knowledge and skills on technical officiating and basic coaching, so that they could apply their knowledge and skills on emerging talents in the province.
A total of 18 participants completed the technical officiating course.
Hands on practical was part of the course during the championships.
This was followed by 23 participants completing the modules that covered in the basic coaching course.
There were a range of participants from all walks of life – senior civil servants, teachers, one policewoman, two electricians, athletes and youths.
The course was facilitated by National Sports Institute’s Philip Kamane and APNG executive committee member and coach Malcolm Limbai.
They were assisted by Lazarus Bureng and Frank Koibu.
“We acknowledge West New Britain government for logistics support and the availability of the training facilities,” APNG said in a statement yesterday.
