A K49 million AusAID-funded project that includes a library, four classrooms and a hostel for Port Moresby’s Caritas Technical Secondary School is underway.
AusAID counsellor Madeleine Moss said last Friday in Port
Moresby the projects were initiated and carried out by the incentive fund the AusAID supported.
“It’s a worthwhile project because we are helping to develop girls’ education which is important for the society,” Moss said.
Incentive fund deputy programme manager Justice Gua said the components of the project included the construction of a library, students’ dormitory, four classrooms and an upgrade of 12 teachers’ studio accommodation.
Gua said the project would begin on June 8 and was expected to be completed by Nov 30.
He said the project also viewed and supported campaigns against social issues such as gender and HIV/AIDS.
“Apart from the infrastructure, incentive fund also looks at creating a foundation to address gender and HIV/AIDS issues in the school,” Gua said.
The launching was witnessed by South Korean ambassador Whie Jin Lee, Moss, AusAID first secretary Kanu Negi, Gua,  acting first assistant secretary for planning and monitoring Reichart Thanda, parents, staff and pupils.
The ceremony began with a mass led by school’s chaplain and board member Fr Eduardo Revilla, followed by the blessing of the site and unveiling of signage.
Teaching staff Mary Philip said: “The gift we receive today will create infrastructure and services that will not only benefit the girls of the school, but also this community and the generations to come.”
The school director Sr Florentina Cho said AusAID had also funded previous projects in the school.
