FORMER governor-general and author Sir Paulias Matane has urged potential writers to take up the challenge of writing as he prepares to launch his next book, Understanding Papua New Guinea, later this year.
Sir Paulias identified Benedict Warwakai, a relative of PNG’s first Catholic martyr Peter ToRot, as probably the youngest writer from East New Britain to publish a book.
Warwakai’s first book, My Graduation, was published late last year and would be launched this year.
Sir Paulias said since retiring from active public service in 1986, he assisted young writers pursue their dreams of writing books.
He said so far, 55 writers had sought his assistance in publishing 87 books.
Sir Paulias said he encouraged and gave tips to writers but did not edit their manuscript because he believed that would only make them dependent on him to complete their books.
He said during his travel throughout the world and in his line of duty with government, he still believed PNG to be blessed with an abundance of rich culture and resources.
“Papua New Guineans must be proud of our country and portray the country through writing books,” Sir Paulias said.
Meanwhile, author Benedict Warwakai said Sir Paulias provided the inspiration and motivation for him to write his book.
He said he started writing his book in 2011 and completed it last year with Sir Paulias’s help.
Warwakai said the book was about his life and education from primary school to university.
He was working on his second book.
Sir Paulias’s 49th book is co-authored by close friend M.L Ahuja.
