Aussie trainer gives boxers tips

LOCAL boxers need consistency and repetition in their training to ensure they are competitive in international competitions, says Australian professional trainer Peter Morrison.
Morrison pointed that during a workshop for boxing coaches and athletes at the Taurama Aquatic Centre earlier this week.
He also pointed out that boxers were usually brought into town only when there was a competition.
“There’s no opportunity for them to have consistency in their training,” Morrison said
“It would be great if we can get sponsors to see the value in these athletes as role models of healthy living.
“They do not drinking and smoke, as they’re training hard.
“Get some sponsorship behind boxing and we’ll have more opportunities to bring boxers in from the village.
“They could live in Port Moresby, train here at the High Performance Centre and get access to nutritional, strength and conditioning coaches.
“This would boost their sparring and boxing instead of having them fade in and out of the sport.”
The workshop was attended by over twenty coaches and athletes, with sessions on different training and coaching styles, drills, footwork and sharing of ideas. High Performance Sport staff conducted sessions on nutrition, diet and boxing exercises.
Participants were also taken through creative training and sparring drills.
“I think the benefit is that we’re sharing ideas, and some of the coaches here might have picked up something that they hadn’t known before which they can adapt to their own environment,” Morrison said.
