AN Australian charity organisation and a local tour operator have donated K20,000 to an elementary school along the Kokoda Track in Northern.
Hearts and Minds Foundation and PNG local tour operator South Seas Horizons made the donation to Manari Elementary School in Kokoda on Anzac Day. Manari is situated three-to-four days’ walk on the Kokoda Track from Port Moresby.
Of the K20,000, K10,000 will go to teachers’ wages and K10,000 for school levy payments to ensure all Manari children can attend elementary school free this year.
Greg Wallace, a founding member of the Hearts and Minds Foundation, spoke about his time on the track and how and why he fell in love with Manari village.
“I walked the track last year with South Seas Horizons members and as we came into Manari village, the porters and guides introduced us to their families,” he said. “We instantly felt connected to the place. We promised them we would be back to support the village in any small way we could.”
