THE Australian Federal Police (AFP) will continue to support the PNG police, AFP assistant commissioner Mandy Newton says.

Newton told The National last Friday that AFP had 16 officers working with PNG police.

“Our air contingent manager Tim Doldge works closely with Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga to develop police capabilities at the Bomana Police College,” she said.

Newton said the AFP was committed to developing the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary into a modern force.

“AFP will help as much as possible to develop the PNG police into a stronger force,” she said.

Newton added that the AFP had helped the constabulary for many years.

“AFP is happy to support the PNG police develop their skills and capabilities to create a very modern force,” she said. Newton said AFP was assisting the PNG police with community policing.

“We also assist the court and the judicial systems in the law and justice sector,” she said.

Newton said the Australian government wanted to see stability in law and order in PNG.

“As a result of our security confidence, it will attract investors and our economy will grow,” she said.
