Australian miner stopped in East Sepik

THE East Sepik administration has set up a team to investigate an Australian miner who entered the province with his mining equipment last weekend.
Angoram district administrator Raymond Wungen said the miner went up the Sepik River with equipment which was believed to be for the Frieda River project.
“The tugboat with the pontoon loaded with mining machinery passed through Angoram over the weekend,” he said.
“The man claimed that he had gained authority and clearance from the national Government and that was why when he
came he went straight up,” he said.
“He proceeded all the way to Tamo.”
Wungen led a group up on Monday – including police, Customs officers and staff from the governor’s office – and took the man to Wewak.
“We had a meeting with him and we came up with some issues that he had to sort out before going up there.”
Wungen said the provincial administrator ordered that the tugboat be taken to Wewak immediately.
