VANIMO-GREEN development authority (DDA) has given K1 million to rebuild a bridge that links Green River station and Vanimo town in West Sepik, local MP Belden Namah says.
“My DDA has given the money to the Vanimo Forest Products who are our development partners in the district,” he said.
“They are waiting for the materials to arrive before they start construction of the Dio River bridge.”
Namah said the 100m long bridge collapsed in April 2019 after a huge tree fell on it.
The bridge had been built by Australian Defence Force engineers in 1994.
Meanwhile, a public motor vehicle (PMV) owner Anna Kane said the bridge had disrupted people living beyond the river to access services and to do business.
“Green River government station that provides health, education and other services was really affected,” she said.
“Shops had difficulties in restocking their stocks and farmers also were unable to transport their goods like vanilla, cocoa and garden food to sell in Vanimo.”
