THE National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and the Sandaun government will build a jetty for K15 million in Vanimo to help fishermen bring their catches to the market, Governor Tony Wouwou says.
“The provincial government will fund 40 per cent and NFA 60 per cent for the project,” he said.
“This jetty is timely as fishermen right now bring their catches to the beachfront in search of customers.
“But with this jetty, it will be where fishermen and customers meet and do business.”
Wowou said the province was an economic zone and the Government planned to build a wharf to meet the demand for economic activities such as oil palm, logging and the Freida river project.
“We are planning small but impacted project such as this jetty to help small people tap into the spin-off activities that will be generated from these multimillion kina projects,” he said.
The NFA said a memorandum of agreement signed last week opened collaboration on fisheries development initiatives in West Sepik.
“There is a schedule of priority projects and one is the fish market and jetty project funded under the Japanese International Corporation Agency programme,” it said.
“The process of ensuring that this project is confirm is still ongoing.”
