CENTRAL health authority chief executive officer Dr James Amini wants people to get vaccinated and adhere to the new normal during the festive period.
He said this was the time that families got together which was good but people should not forget that the Coronavirus (Covid-19) was around and the next surge was expected from February.
Dr Amini said getting vaccinated, wearing masks, washing hands and keeping safe was important as there was increase in the number of cases in Central during the third surge.
“Since the beginning of the surge, more than 800 cases have been recorded in Central but most were from the recent surge,” he said. “We had patients in the rural areas.”
Dr Amini said since the Port Moresby General Hospital was stretched to its limit, the province tried as much as possible to take care of some patients and transferred only the mild to severe patients to the city, adding that health centres in Central had set up isolation areas to care for patients.
According to the National Control Centre update last week, Central had recorded 820 Covid-19 cases of which seven were Delta cases, two deaths, 814 recovered and four cases were active.
A total of 9,581 tests had been conducted of which 820 were detected and it is currently regarded as a low risk area while the National Capital District, Milne Bay and Gulf are in the medium risk group.
