THE 2013 Male Athlete of the Year, cricketer Assad Vala has enjoyed every moment of that recognition apart from hitting centuries and playing against some of world’s best cricketers.

The 26-year-old Vala (pictured) said after winning the award last year, it had been a real boost to his cricket.

The award has been the highlight of his career and Vala is now encouraging the sporting community to nominate people who deserve recognition for their contribution.

Fourteen prizes are on offer in this year’s SP Sports Awards.

“I have enjoyed every moment of being the 2013 Male Athlete of the Year and I thank everyone involved in this initiative,” Vala told The National at the official launch of the 2014 SP Awards in Port Moresby last Thursday.

Straight after winning the award, the man from Keapara and Alukuni  in the Central province packed his cricket bag and has been travelling  continuously over the last six months on tours with the national team, Baramundis.

His recent trip was to the One Day International (ODI) Cricket World Cup qualifiers in New Zealand.

“Recognising the achievements of Papua New Guinea’s sporting community does not only encourage and motive the current generation of athletes and officials but also provides inspiration for future generations of athletes,” Vala said.

Vala is contracted to the Brisbane Heat in Twenty20 Big Bash League in Australia and says the award comes with responsibility and many athletes and upcoming players look up to the winners of the SP Awards as role models.

Vala, who turns 27 on August 5, is considered one of the countries premier batsman.

Vala started playing cricket for the Hoods Cricket Club at 10 and broke into the national team at the age of 17.

Vala also thanked his Baramundis team-mates and coach Peter Anderson who played a part in his recognition.
