Banab Bridge taking shape, says Wereh

A centre pier of Banab Bridge in Madang is being installed and bridge abutment is slowly taking shape on both sides of the river bank, Works Secretary David Wereh says.
In a statement yesterday, Wereh said work on the bridge is expected to be completed before school starts next year.
Wereh warns motorists that the bypass was accessible only during dry weather. He warned them not to use the bypass during the wet season as it could get dangerous because of flooding.
The bridge collapsed about 10 months ago.
Wereh said the reconstruction of the bridge was complex piece engineering.
“It is not an ordinary job because it needs structural analysis and the re-construction of the centre pier.
The reconstruction is a mammoth task where a crane will be transported to the site to drive piles.
Wereh said that the project had been delayed unnecessarily because of the social and law and order issues caused by the local community charging fees to ferry people across.
Alcohol, drugs and crime were major problems.
