Sir Gibbs sworn in as chief justice

CHIEF Justice Sir Gibbs Salika was sworn in by Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae at Government House in Port Moresby yesterday.
He is expected to make his ceremonial sitting on Jan 14.
His term is for 10 years.
The 63-year-old was appointed this month to take over from Sir Salamo Injia, who has retired.
Sir Gibbs had been a judge of the National and Supreme courts since 1989.
He was born on Aug 11, 1955, at Umniao in the South Fly district of Western.
After completing primary and secondary education in Fly River district, he attended the University of PNG from 1975 to 1978 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Law.
He was admitted to the bar in 1979 and went on to work with the Office of the Public Prosecutor.
He was state prosecutor for about six years before moving to the Ombudsman Commission as its counsel.
In 1988, he was appointed magistrate and in 1990 he was appointed a judge of the National and Supreme courts.
Sir Gibbs is also an elder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
He is married to Lady Rossica and they have five children – three girls and two boys.
“It’s an honour and privilege to serve our country this way,” he said.
“I’ve got to repay back to the people of PNG that have looked after me for these many years that I’ve served as a lawyer and a judge.”
