Bank focuses on building information technology

BANK South Pacific (BSP) is now focusing on recruiting more graduates in the field of information technology through its graduate development programme (GDP), according to group chief executive officer Robin Fleming.
Responding to questions from The National on the progress of the programme over the years, Fleming said it had been its focus over the last two years given the increased demand of this skill set.
“Over the past two years in particular, there has been a focus on recruiting graduates with information technology skills recognising the demand for these skills in PNG,” he said.
“It is also in line with BSP’s objective to maintain and operate our banking systems for the Pacific in Papua New Guinea.
“Over the past four years more than 40 graduates have been selected to participate in BSP’s graduate programme and have moved to full time employment with the bank.
“Some of BSP’s general managers including Hari Rabura, Nuni Kulu and Gheno Minia have been recruited via BSP’s graduate programme.
“BSP has an established graduate recruitment programme that dates back to the pre-acquisition of PNGBC.
“The programme involves 12 months of training with rotation across all of BSP’s strategic business units during that period to provide the graduates with an immersive experience of as many roles and functions within BSP as possible.
“This in turn provides the graduates with a sound foundation of our policies and procedures.
“It also helps gives them an understanding of the interaction between our strategic business units, and of course the importance of customers, with customer service roles a key component of the 12-month programme.”
