THE Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) board donated K50,000 to the Manam volcano disaster relief appeal in Madang recently.
Deputy governor Joe Teria presented a cheque on behalf of the bank’s board to Madang provincial administrator Joseph Bunomane.
Teria said the donation was a token of the bank’s assistance towards the people of Manam Island, who were affected by the latest volcanic eruption on June 28, 2019.
The donation would assist Manam Islanders to restore normalcy to their lives. Bunomane thanked the bank for the donation and said that the funds would be used for basic medical supplies and other necessities for the islanders.
The bank also donated two 5,000-litre water tanks for the rural Walium station in the Usino-Bundi. Bunomane said access to clean water in that part of Madang had been an ongoing challenge for the local communities, especially during the dry season.
The donation was made possible after BPNG and other financial institutions held awareness sessions in the district targeting schools, landowners and the public last year and witnessed the dire need for water during the dry months.
Teria presented the two water tanks at Walium station last Saturday.
