PAPUA New Guineans can now enjoy a cup of locally produced coffee sold in satchets – similar to bags of tea.
Georgina Benson, from Goroka, is the owner of Mohone Coffee, which she displayed at the International Convention Centre last week.
Benson, a bank officer based in Lae, produces the sachets or bags of coffee in her own time with the help of friends.
“I love coffee and I realised that it’s quite expensive to buy PNG-produced coffee from the shops,” she said.
“I decided to do something simple for myself. I started ordering filtering bags online and packing ground coffee three years ago. I didn’t realise that these products would be sold not just from home on table markets.
“It’s more than that, the average Papua New Guineans cannot afford this even if they went to the shops.
“The bulk of the people buy blended coffee.
“We Papua New Guineans produce quality coffee from our very own soil and it should be produced for our people to enjoy.
“That’s when the idea came about to make something cheaper, affordable and of quality and I have since started selling them.”
Benson said she packs 500 satchets in a box (110) grams. If someone buys it from me, they can go and sell it for K1000.
