BANZ Rugby League management and officials received a timely boost last Friday when Jiwaka Governor Dr William Tongamp committed K500,000 to upgrade the facilities.
League president Timothy Ginga said the commitment was a blessing for the management and league developers in North Waghi and Jiwaka as a whole.
“I thank Tongamp for understanding the situation that this iconic field has been facing,” Ginga said.
“It needs a major upgrade to restore it to its former glory when inter-city and international matches were played here.
“His announcement to assist in the redevelopment of the Banz field is a massive boost for rugby league.
“The management, officials, players, sponsors, business houses and fans appreciate the support shown by our governor.
“Rugby league plays a major role in changing the mindsets of our young people to become better citizens.
“Tongamp is always keen and supportive of sports because through sports, we can promote peace, unity and the image of our province.
“We are very humbled by this gesture.
“We are looking forward to do a general upgrade – put up new fencing, build a new grandstand and other redevelopments.”
Ginga said the field – once upgraded – would generate good gate takings, increase interest in the game, produce good athletes and boost the local economy.
“The support will go a long way in complementing our efforts to run a professional league,” Ginga said.
“We hope other leaders, individuals and corporate organisations come on board with their support.”
